<How to Identify A Licensed and Unlicensed Money Lender (LMLs vs UMLs) | Crime Prevention & Awareness>
.
Unlicensed Moneylenders (UML) MODUS OPERANDI/ METHODS
They:
- 'Advertise' over SMS, Whatsapp & social media
- Make unsolicited phone calls to offer loans
- 'Interview' and offer 'instant approvals' over phone/ email
- Ask for your personal details (i.e. NRIC & address), bank account- and Singpass- details
- Make borrowers sign into 'fake' loan agreements
- Use threats and fear tactics towards borrowers who are unable to pay off loans
- Some have been impersonating as real licensed money lenders to deceive victims
.
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF
Licensed Moneylenders are NOT allowed to solicit businesses using phone calls, SMS, Whatsapp and social media platforms.
- Beware of UMLs impersonating as real licensed moneylenders. They have been reported to use real licensed moneylenders company names and addresses to deceive potential borrowers who become their victims
- If you receive unsolicited phone calls or messages via SMS/ Whatsapp/ social media platforms offering financial loans - IGNORE, REPORT and BLOCK them
- No matter how attractive the offer may look - IGNORE, REPORT and BLOCK
- It is best to NEVER respond to such calls or messages
- If there is a need to borrow from genuine licensed moneylenders, visit Ministry of Law's website: https://rom.mlaw.gov.sg/…/list-of-licensed-moneylenders-in…/
